oh no! death of an iMac

sooooo...my beloved computer crashed. it's less than three years old and the hard drive died a sudden and violent death. i work from home, i blog from home, i have a shop on etsy...being computer-less is just a little disruptive to my day-to-day life. and i've now been without my iMac for almost TWO weeks. deep breaths.

it's fine. i'm okay. an apple tech is coming today to hopefully get it all straightened out. cross your fingers!

backyard: then and now

the backyard was horribly intimidating to me when we first moved in. thankfully, i was not in charge of anything relating to outside. instead, i relied on the expertise of fish's dad (rip) and the i'll-try-anythingness of fish.

when life gives you lemons...
(repotting a lemon tree)

fish and i were browsing another nursery -- i think it's becoming one of my all time favorite things to do. i'd call it a cheap date, but i usually end up going home with more plants and flowers and pots and etc.

fish and i were browsing another nursery when we stumbled across...

i've been pining for a lemon tree. i mention it constantly (see here, here, here, and here)...and it must have stuck in the back of fish's head because he suggested we buy one!

the flower beds

about a month ago, in our first foray into landscaping, we (mostly fish) built small retaining walls around the flower beds in front of our house. after completion, it was finally time for the fun part: adding the flowers. hooray!!

we did the tiniest bit of research into flowers recommended for our zone: how big they got, how much sun they needed, what colors they bloomed. we had a rough idea of the ones we liked before heading in to home depot.

new outdoor lights

we finally...finally...updated our outdoor lights. wahoo!

changing them out has been on my wishlist since the day we moved in. take a look at their crusty crustiness -- blech!!

grody!! why in the world did we take so long to change them?? it turns out we're extra-picky about outdoor lights. ...oh wait, it took us almost a year to choose a dining room light too...so i guess we're just picky about lights in general.

we wanted something classic, understated. i wanted black fixtures -- to coordinate with the railings, mailbox, house numbers, and chairs. meanwhile, fish doesn't like seeded glass and neither of us wanted frosted glass -- so we concentrated on clear glass lights.

plans for the basement, laundry room

the storage shelves that fish built were just the first step in improving the finished basement. he was able to move a large amount of boxes off the floor and into the furnace room, freeing up a whole lot of usable space.

we don't want to over-improve our home by doing too much in the basement, but we definitely want a new floor.

the current vinyl tile:

it's not the most offensive floor i've ever seen...but it's dirty. there's a layer of grime i can't capture in pictures -- and we've tried just about every kind of solvent there is to try getting it clean.

so...we're putting new floors in.

successful organization:
toddler clothes

toddler (and baby!) clothes are tiny and adorable...but there's only so much you can suspend on those similarly tiny and adorable child-sized hangers. pants? socks? undies? tutus?

...so you end up with a big honkin' dresser taking up valuable playspace in your child's room...or maybe you try to shove one into the closet.

if you have a smallish-room and a corresponding smallish-closet (i.e. not a walk-in and too small to force a dresser into), maybe my jiggery will work for you: hanging canvas sweater organizers.

the front porch is back

a couple of weekends ago, we pulled the table that fish made and our ikea chairs out of storage and put them back in their rightful place on the front porch. this is what it looked like last year:

nothing too fancy. we had just moved in and i simply wanted a comfy space outdoors to eat lunch with K while we took a break from making all those sidewalk chalk villages. by that point, i had painted the mailbox and the porch railing and fish had installed a wireless doorbell and floating house numbers

what i'm reading

i'm not sure i've ever mentioned it, but i like to read.
correction: love to read.
a lot.

i'm pretty good about updating my to-read, currently-reading, and read lists on goodreads. buuuuuut, just in case you don't feel the need to belong to yet another social network site ((although i would highly, highly recommend goodreads if you're a bookworm, simply for the ability to keep track of books you want to read)), i decided to start sharing the books i'm reading here. i know, it's not really related to our first home, but i like to decorate and i like to read. i can't be the only one, right???

the lamp and the landing strip

the landing strip in our entry has gone through many, many, many changes:

while i love that lamp in the bottom set of pictures, it was bringing me down, man. the black shade was too dark, too heavy with the other elements i had on the table. the gold base wasn't jiving with the rest of the metallics. i just couldn't get it to come together.

i love me some houseplants

i talk about flowers all the time because i love them so much. but, i also think our home would not be complete without a healthy dose of greenery. after accidentally killing our houseplants by giving them sugar water (Death by Mold), the place was feeling a bit barren. this, combined with the fact that spring is here and there are all sorts of plant-icular temptations begging to come home with me, means i've been snapping up leafy gems left and right. plants really do add so much life to a home, cheesy as it sounds.

just how plant-crazy have i gone??

april in review

may day! may day!
june is so close, i can taste it...

before we plunge headfirst into almost-summer, here's a recap of what we did in april:

it was another jam-packed month!
